LGBTQIA+ Pride Month

Brazil

Brazil is known for its receptive and hospitable people.  In the month of June, we at Havas Creative Tours love to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ Pride Month and make a toast to diversity!

We are proud to say that Brazil is a destination that not only offers beautiful landscapes, but also people that welcome all tourists and love diversity! For June, the month of LGBT pride, we have prepared for you a list of the top 5 LGBTQIA+ friendly destinations in our country:

Sao Paulo: São Paulo is on of the most interesting cities to be in when we think about LGBTQIA+ tourism in Brazil. The city is one of the most populous in the world, this makes it, in essence, quite diverse. Amazing nightlife, the best restaurants in the country, year round celebration of art all over the city and the home of the one of the largest LGBT Pride Parade in the Americas!

Rio de Janeiro: Rio is the the place to be for LGBTQIA+ tourists is Rio de Janeiro. Attracted by the natural beauty of the beaches and hills, as well as by the cariocas running along the beach of Ipanema or Copacabana, foreigners have already chosen Rio as the most LGBTQIA+ friendly destination in the world and the Carioca lifestyle is one of those responsible for maintaining the city’s charm.

Belo Horizonte: Is one of the new exponents of LGBTQIA+ tourism. With increasing investments, it has participated in events in the segment to show its openness to diversity. Around Belo Horizonte region we find the historic cities of Brazil, full of culture, art, history and some legendary parties and festivals!

Florianopolis: In the southern region of the country, Florianópolis is certainly the highlight. “Ilha da Magia” (The Magic Island) has been working its magic with the LGBTQIA+ community for many years. So much so that in 2012 the International Association of LGBTQIA+ Tourism, held its annual convention in the city. With amazing beaches, good nightlife and a very unique island feeling ambience.

Salvador: As the most internationally known city in the Northeast, Salvador welcomes diversity. Crowded during its famous Carnival, the city has good weather all year round and, for the LGBTQIA+ public, nothing like an excuse to put on beach clothes and enjoy the sun, the music and the laid-back lifestyle.

Pipa ´s Beach at Rio Grande Do Norte

By Jeanleo Figueira

Praia de Pipa is one of the most famous beaches in Rio Grande do Norte and it is no wonder, the beach is simply paradisiacal! I was there for 3 days and I would like to share with you this beautiful experience in Pipa. Check out the 3-day itinerary in Pipa.

Praia de Pipa is located on the south coast of Rio Grande do Norte, in the municipality of Tibau do Sul. To get there, it is recommended to go to Natal, capital of the state of Rio Grande do Norte and then take a car to Pipa (1.5 hours).

The beaches of Pipa are simply perfect and are part of the lists with the best beaches in Rio Grande do Norte and also with the best in Brazil. Two of the 25 most beautiful beaches in Brazil, according to the 2019 Travellere’s Choice award from the TripAdvisor site of the year, are located in Pipa. They are:

Baía dos Golfinhos, which occupies the 8th position; Praia do Madeiro, which occupies the 23rd position.

Praia de Pipa has accommodation options for all tastes, I preferred to stay at a charming inn in Praia do Amor. The location is essential because it has some inns away from the beaches. The first tip is to stay close to Praia do Amor or Praia do Centro.

3 day itinerary

1st Day: Praia do Amor + Boat Trip + Sunset

After breakfast at the inn I went for a walk on the beach, because I wanted to take advantage of the fact that the tide would be low in the morning.

Here I leave another important tip: always check the tide table in Pipa, as there are some beaches, such as Baía do Golfinho, which can only be reached by foot, so the tide must be low.

As the Pousada was very close to Praia do Amor I went there. As soon as I stopped at the lookout, I already fell head over heels in love with Pipa.

I stayed there enjoying that wonderful landscape and then I started to go down to the beach.

From Praia do Amor, I walked for about 20 minutes and got to Praia do Centro to take a boat trip.

The tour passes through the main beaches of Pipa and lasted approximately 1 hour. The main objective of this tour is to see the dolphins and I saw several, one of the main attractions in Pipa.

The motorboat headed towards Baía dos Golfinhos and went to Praia do Madeiro, a place where we stayed for a while and could watch the dolphins. Then we had a 20-minute bathing stop and went back to Praia do Centro.

On the beach in the center there are some nice restaurants and bars, from which you can watch the sunset. It is a beautiful experience and you can practically see the sunset from any point on the beach.

To end the day in Pipa I went to the city center. After 7 pm it is forbidden to drive down this street with cars, as it becomes a pedestrian street. It really is a charm, many bars, good restaurants and shops from all you can imagine, I took the opportunity to buy some souvenirs. Some stores sell beautiful handicrafts made by the locals as souvenirs.

2nd Day: Jeep city tour

For the second day in Pipa I took a Jeep tour of the main tourist spots in the city. At 9 o’clock the guide picked me up at the inn and took us to the place where we would go for the tour.

This tour is like a city tour as it will pass through the main tourist spots in Pipa.

The first stop is at Chapadão de Pipa, a simply perfect place! From there it is possible to have a lovely view of Praia do Amor. The red cliffs, the blue sky and the sea mix to form a paradisiacal setting. Undoubtedly the most beautiful beach I have seen so far.

There the guide showed the stone that gave rise to the name Pipa and told the reason, because the stone is shaped like a barrel of wine that the Portuguese call a kite – Pipa- . This stone was the point of reference for ships arriving in Colonial Brazil.

Then we cross the Rio Catú by boat, which divides Barra de Cunhaú from Praia de Sibaúma. We stopped for an hour to bathe in the natural pools.

Then we went to a restaurant for lunch. From there we went to Praia de Sibaúma, where we paused to see the sea turtles. We got to see some.

The next stop was at the Cacimbinhas Dunes where the guide handed over some boards for Skibunda – a typical sand slide board. A lot of fun to slide through the dunes on the board.

We continue to Lagoa Guaraíras in Tibau do Sul to watch the sunset, after that we return to the starting point

3rd Day: Praia do Madeiro

As I said before, Praia do Madeiro is considered one of the 25 most beautiful beaches in Brazil, so I decided to dedicate a day especial for it.

This beach attracts tourists from all over Brazil and the world who go there to see the dolphins, which appear mainly in the morning. The beach is beautiful, with amazing cliffs, the sea surrounded by a lot of green forest, a breathtaking scenery. I loved it.

Then we went to a beautiful viewpoint where we could contemplate the beauty of Praia do Madeiro and agree with its reputation for being one of the most beautiful in Brazil. From the lookout point we go to the stairs, as it is necessary to climb down to get to the beach.

Praia do Madeiro is in an environmentally protected area, so its tents cannot have a bathroom and cannot operate at night. So they close around 16:30.

It is an unforgettable experience to be able to bathe in the sea and watch the dolphins, which swim very close to us.

On the beach it is possible to rent kayaks, because with them you will be able to get very close to the dolphins.

I stayed on the beach until  4pm. I was able to see dolphins all day, but it was in the morning that they appeared the most.

And so, with a short 3-day itinerary, I was able to enjoy the beautiful things that Pipa has to offer, such as its breathtaking beaches, unique streets in the center and welcoming people.

Selaron Stairs in Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro – Downtown

There is no way to talk about the staircase without mentioning the artist responsible for it and who lends his surname to the work: Jorge Selarón.

Selarón was born in Chile, in 1947, in the small town of Limache, and died in Rio de Janeiro, on January 10th, 2013. A self-taught painter and ceramist, the Chilean realized in Santa Teresa his greatest and best-known work, known today as “Escadaria do Selarón”, listed by the city hall of this city in 2005 and located at Rua Manoel Carneiro.

The “Escadaria do Selarón“, a place formerly known as Escadaria do Convento de Santa Teresa, has 215 steps and 125 meters in length and connects Rua Joaquim Silva, in the Lapa neighborhood, with Ladeira de Santa Teresa, in the Santa Teresa neighborhood in the city of Rio.

The “Escadaria do Selarón” is considered the largest sculpture in the world made by a single artist since Jorge Selarón has always worked alone, relying only on the money he made from the sale of his paintings (all representing the theme of the pregnant black woman, an emotional motif of his own life, as he states) and with eventual donations from residents. The work does not stop, the tiles are placed, new tiles arrive, others are removed from there, they change places.

Nowadays it is a very popular place for locals and tourists to take pictures as the colors are simply amazing, don’t miss it on your next visit to the Wonderful city!

Educational Groups to Brazil

Brazil is a huge and diverse country, which means we have many kinds of different experiences to offer. Havas Creative tours has a great background with educational groups from various fields of knowledge: Finance, agribusiness, afro-Brazilian culture, heritage tours, MBA learning exchange groups, Undergraduate Exchange Groups, Elder Learning Groups, Volunteer Groups, Geology Groups, Contemporary Art Immersion, and several others.

A possibility of Volunteer Group, for example, is to work with researchers helping in the protection of the Jaguars in the state of Goiás:

The predominant vegetation in the state of Goiás is the Cerrado, mainly in its rural area. The fauna of the state is very rich and it is possible to find jaguars, guarás, armadillos, deer, monkeys, pacas, capybaras, and others. However, several of these species are threatened with extinction due to deforestation, fires, the use of pesticides, and predatory hunting in the region.

In this program, the goal is to take care of one of the most beautiful creatures of this fauna: the jaguars! Hunting, exploitation, mistreatment, burning, deforestation, and even illegal captivity affects these animals both physically and psychologically. To preserve and protect wild fauna and promote environmental education in Brazil, we work with No Extinction – NEX as a partner in our mission in the cerrado of Goiás. Our partner NGO rescues, shelters, and cares for jaguars until they are ready to be reintroduced to their natural habitat (when possible).

It will be four days taking care, feeding, and interacting with the most beautiful species of Brazilian jaguars! In addition to getting to know better how they live, their reactions, their histories, and their biology, this will be a unique opportunity to have a differentiated contact with the local nature. An experience of affection and care for one of the animals that are the symbol of our country, knowing that your work will help to generate scientific data improve the preservation of this species for many, many years. A sample itinerary would be:

Day 1 – Arrival at Brasília airport until 4 pm. Departure to Corumbá de Goiás (approximately 2 hours by road). Arrival at the farm, initial presentation of the place, acclimatization at the NGO, dinner, and rest.

Day 2 – Theoretical training in the morning and in the afternoon, beginning of practical activities.

Day 3 – Practical activities: setting of the enclosure, preparation, and placement of enrichment, review of the camera trap.

Day 4 – Practical activities: preparation and placement of Ambiental enrichment. Departure to the waterfall and return to Brasília airport at 2:00 pm.

Havas Playlist on Spotfy – Brazilian music to hear and unplug

Brazilian music is one of the most important expressions of Brazilian culture. It was formed, mainly, from the fusion of European, indigenous, and African elements, brought by Portuguese colonizers and slaves in the first moment and developed during our 522 years of history assimilating other styles such as jazz, rock, soul, hip-hop, country music, and others.

There are several types of Brazilian music: Axé, Baião, Bossa Nova, Choro, Forró, Frevo, Funk Carioca, Gospel, Lambada, MPB, Pagode, Samba, Sertanejo and Xote.
